Sectional championships up for grabs today

With no major upsets in the early rounds of the Section VII boys’ basketball playoffs, all three championship games today will have the second seed taking on the first seed.

Moriah is looking to repeat as Class D champion, while AuSable Valley won in Class C last year and is attempting to duplicate the feat in Class B. Seton Catholic and Ticonderoga would both like to become the new Class C champ.

The action starts at noon today at the Plattsburgh State Field House.

Class B

No. 2 AuSable Valley vs. No. 1 Plattsburgh High, 3:30 p.m.

These teams split their regular-season encounters — the Hornets won the first meeting 62-56 and the Patriots won 68-59 last month.

AuSable Valley comes into today’s final on a seven-game winning streak that includes a 68-59 double-overtime victory over Northeastern Clinton in the Class B semifinals last weekend.

Junior guard Zach Cosgrove scored a season-high 33 points in that game, well above his average of 10.9 points per game. He’s the Patriots’ biggest threat from the outside; he hit nine triples against the Cougars and has totaled 31 this season. Shane Douglas leads the team with 13.4 points per contest, and John Goodnough is right behind with 13.0.

Plattsburgh has won five of its last six contests, although the one loss was a 54-31 trouncing by Peru. The Hornets trailed Saranac by four at halftime of their semifinal game, and then they clamped down on defense. The Chiefs scored just six points the rest of the way as Plattsburgh won 45-34.

Taoufik Maknani led the Hornets with 25 points and is their top scorer on the season with a 13.4 average. Fellow senior guard Garrett Frady averages 11.8 ppg.
