SARANAC LAKE — The North Country Community College women’s basketball team will join the eight-team field for the NJCAA Division III, Region III women’s basketball tournament at Onondaga Community College this weekend.
By virtue of a 10-11 record in Region III play, the Saints (16-11) were awarded the eighth seed and will face top-seeded Onondaga at 5 p.m. Friday.
“We’ve lost some close games this year, and we could’ve had a better season,” North Country coach Jerrad Dumont said. “Ten of our 12 players are freshmen, so it will be nice to have them get a taste of the regional tournament.”
The Lazers (22-0) defeated the Saints in Saranac Lake 99-49 Dec. 7.
“We had practice (Monday), and I told the girls, ‘We don’t have to be better than them all season, just for two hours on Friday,’” Dumont said. “We have to play a flawless game. We can’t be turning the basketball over. We have to get a good shot every single time.
“I just can’t stress enough about how good this experience will be for our freshmen. Ten will return next year, and we’ll be fighting for the tournament’s top seed. We’ll give it our best shot.”
