Saranac, Northeastern Clinton move into Class B semis

SARANAC — Saranac went on a 22-8 run in the third quarter Wednesday and pulled away to a 60-42 victory over Beekmantown in the Section VII Class B boys’ basketball quarterfinals.

The Chiefs will oppose top-seeded Plattsburgh High in Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. semifinals at Beekmantown Central School.

John Maye led the Chiefs with 17 points and 12 rebounds and was followed by Tanner Rascoe with 14, Andrew Cutaiar 13 and Mitchell Pellerin, 10. Dylan Christopherson had a team-high 17 rebounds.

“Christopherson scored only three points, but he was a huge difference in the game (Wednesday),” Saranac coach Brent Denis said. “He was phenomenal, as was Cutaiar off the bench.

“We got good balanced scoring. We came out in the second half and the kids decided they didn’t want their season to end (Wednesday).”

Brandon McDonald paced the Eagles with 13 points and Greg Manney was next with 11.

Saranac jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the first quarter.

“Both teams came out pretty tight in the first quarter,” Denis said. “There wasn’t really any flow at all.

“In the third quarter, it wasn’t about x’s and o’s. Our kids just hit some big shots, with Rascoe and Pellerin combining for 13 points in the third. We stiffened up our defense in that quarter, and I think that was the difference in the game.”
