ROUSES POINT — The Northeastern Clinton boys’ hockey team must have a flare for the late-game dramatics.
For the second time in as many days, the Cougars tied Saranac Lake in the closing minutes of regulation before upending the Red Storm in sudden-death overtime.
Nick Leduc’s game-winning goal at 3:13 of the second overtime session gave Northeastern Clinton a 3-2 win in the Section VII quarterfinals Tuesday.
The Cougars (9-7-1) overcame an early two-goal deficit.
“After (Monday’s) overtime thriller, I was hoping we would have enough emotion to come back and play hard again (Tuesday),” Northeastern Clinton coach Rob Francis said. “Getting down by a couple goals, especially one early on in the first, didn’t seem to faze the boys. We told them to keep playing our systems and good things would happen.”
After Trevor Keough and J.B. Chapin gave the Red Storm (6-12-1) a two-goal lead, Ryan Marks put the Cougars on the board at 3:34 of the second period.
But that wasn’t the only time Marks figured into the scoring summary.
With 1:06 showing on the clock in the third period at the Rouses Point Civic Center, Marks sent home a shot to knot the contest at 2-all.
“Getting the tying goal late gave us some momentum going into OT, and it was nice to pull out the win,” Francis said.
Northeastern Clinton led shots, 36-28.
Anthony Piche stopped 26-of-28 shots between the pipes to record the victory, while Blake Darrah recorded a 33-save performance in the setback.
The Cougars will meet top-seeded Lake Placid in the semifinal round at the 1932 Rink at 6 p.m. Thursday.
The Blue Bombers swept the regular-season series 2-1 Dec. 27 and 5-1 Feb. 11.
