E'town-Lewis' Whalen reaches milestone in Moriah's victory

ELIZABETHTOWN — The Elizabethtown-Lewis girls had Moriah on the ropes Wednesday night.

The Vikings, however, went on a 17-4 run to finish the game and rallied past the Lions, 47-42, in Northern Basketball League play.

The Moriah victory overshadowed the performance of the Lions’ Lily Whalen, who became the school’s all-time leading scorer.

Elizabethtown-Lewis took a 31-30 lead into the fourth quarter and scored the first seven points of the fourth to take a 38-30 advantage.

It then took a turn for the worse for the Lions when Savannah Graves fouled out and the Vikings went on their run as Sarah Slattery, Taylor Sprague and Caitlin Pelkey combined for all the 17 points.

Madison Stahl led a balanced Moriah offense with 12 points, while Sprague added 12 and Slattery and Pelkey 10 apiece.

Jasmin Barnes and Whalen tossed in 16 points each for the Lions, with Barnes also getting nine rebounds, five assists and five steals, and Whalen eight rebounds and four assists.
