Clinton cruises past Schenectady; North Country men win

PLATTSBURGH — After clinching a spot in the regionals a while back to reach one of its goals for the season, the Clinton Community College men’s basketball team has now set some additional goals.

The Cougars reached one of those Wednesday night in an 84-59 win over Schenectady County Community College.

“We qualified for the regionals three weeks ago,” Clinton coach Kevin Daugherty said.

“After doing so, the guys were pretty adamant about winning 20 games and we were able to do so (Wednesday). This is only the third time since 1968 that Clinton has won 20 games in a season.”

The Cougars (20-7, 17-6) jumped out to a 47-24 lead and cruised to their victory.

“We got off to a quick start and led by 20 points midway through the first half,” Daugherty said. “We were able to maintain our focus. We got everyone in the game and everyone was able to score.”

Kyree Hull scored 21 of his team-high 24 points in the first half for the Cougars.

Mykelle Krecko added 21 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks, while Bayron Carter finished with a triple-double of 14 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Jamie Davison added eight points and five assists.

“Hull has been consistent for us all season,” Daugherty said. “He’s a strong, tough kid.

“Carter had his best all-around game for us this season and Krecko was tough in the paint and ran the floor well.”

Jeremy Gregg tossed in 28 points for the Royals.

“It was also the best crowd we’ve had at a game all season,” Daugherty said.

The Cougars now hit the road for a 3 p.m. contest at Fulton-Montgomery Community College on Saturday.
