Malo captures 30th edition of Masters North Golf Tournament

By JOHN CORYER Press-Republican

---- — MALONE — Experience won out at the 30th annual Masters North Golf Tournament at the Malone Golf Club’s East Course.

The top three finishers in the two-day event, which ended on Friday, were ages 55 and older.

Peter Malo, 55, recorded a 74-72-146 total to win the green jacket and the $650 gift certificate.

Graham Cooke, 66, was denied his 10th title for the second year in a row and was second with a 73-75-148.

Chip Ward, 61, was solid for two days and finished in third with a 74-75-149.

“Where are all the young guys?,” joked tournament director Willie King.

Malo, who is from Montreal and a member of the Royal Montreal Golf Club, shot an even-par 72 on Friday to win by two strokes over Cooke, who lost in a playoff last year to David Passino Jr.

“Malo was rock solid, from tee to green,” King said. “He made a lot of nice putts and never wavered. It was no fluke — he deserved it.”

Malo wrapped up the championship with a par on 18. His even-par 72 was the best round on Friday.

“Graham played well and Chip had his best Masters North ever,” King said.

Greg Wilson (76-76-152) finished fourth, while Cody Roberts (76-77-153) and Michael Roberts (77-76-153) tied for fifth.

Ed Davis was the top local finisher with an 80-74-154, which was good for seventh.

Rounding out the list of money winners were Eric Labounty (80-75-155), John Blain (77-78-155), Paul Ahlgrim (78-77-155), Dave Johnston (79-77-156), Michael Jolin (77-79-156), Troy Collins (76-81-157) and Bart VanLeuvan (80-77-157).

Bob Hughes, after shooting an 85 on Thursday, turned in the second-lowest round of the day on Friday with a 73.

“Bob is a past Masters North champion and was the honoree this year,” King said. “It was nice to see him shoot 73 today.”

Passino, who won last year’s event with an eagle on the first playoff hole, finished this year with a 79-81-160.

“It was a very good tournament,” King said. “The course was in excellent shape and it was more accessible to lower scores.”

The Legends division was just as competitive as Mickey Batten recorded a 83-74-157 total to win by one stroke over Gord Hanna (80-78-158) and John Esterbrook (82-76-158), who had won the Legends the past two years.

Batten won a $500 gift certificate.

“How good was that for Mickey?,” King said. “That’s the fifth time he’s won it.”

Phil Arsenault (82-80-162), Pierre Archambault (83-79-162) and Michael O’Connor (83-80-163) rounded out the list of money winners.
