---- — ONEONTA — A small band of Plattsburgh State track and field student-athletes headed to Oneonta State to take part in the Oneonta State Last Chance Meet Saturday.
On the women’s side, the Cardinals quartet of Jasmine Boncore, Megan Schweizer, Christen Averill and Katie Ehmann turned in an ECAC-qualifying performance in the 3,200-meter relay. As the only team in the event, the foursome posted a time of 9:54.42.
Ehmann, a senior, was the only Cardinals competitor to take part in a long-distance race as the Kingston native recorded a fourth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:55.04.
Already ensured a spot in the ECAC championships, senior Amanda Schermerhorn took advantage of her final chance at a tune-up as the Scotia product was in the field for the 800-meter dash. She finished fifth in an ECAC-qualifying time of 2:18.72.
In his final trial run before the ECAC championships commence, Ryan Millar recorded another ECAC-qualifying time of 14:32.5 in the 5,000-meter run.
Millar posted a seventh-place finish in the event and bettered the ECAC-qualifying time by nearly 45 seconds.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Eric Adams, Luke Potash, Ben Depo and Esa Jessop came up short by a narrow margin in their bid to earn a spot in the ECAC meet. Their eighth-place time of 44.07 seconds was just over one-quarter of a second more than what was needed to qualify for the regional competition.
Another close finish came in the 3,200-meter relay. John Hamilton, Trevor Kent, Dylen Hedderman and Christian Whalen came up with a second-place finish in a time of 8:10.45 but came up over one second short of an ECAC-qualifying mark in the race.
Senior Depo turned in a 14th-place showing in the discus throw with a toss of 29.2 meters.
Next Thursday, a group of Plattsburgh track and field athletes will converge on Springfield, Mass., to see if they have what it takes to punch a ticket to the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships by way of a great finish at the ECAC championships. The two-day meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
