Cardinals, Saints play to scoreless tie

PLATTSBURGH — With the SUNY Athletic Conference regular season title on the line this past Saturday against Brockport, a tie would have been disaster for the Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team. The Cardinals ended up winning, 2-1, in overtime.

A tie, however, wasn’t such a bad thing for Plattsburgh on Wednesday night.

The Cardinals (16-2-1) and St. Lawrence University (12-2-2) played to a scoreless overtime deadlock in a battle of nationally-ranked Division III teams in a non-conference showdown at the Field House Soccer Complex.

“I thought it was a good tie, if there is such a thing,” said Plattsburgh coach Chris Waterbury. “I was proud of our effort because that was a very good team we were playing.

“They have some very dynamic players and we had some tired legs after the game.”

The Saints, who recorded a 2-0 win over Brockport earlier in the season, did hold a 10-3 advantage in shots. Andy Heighington made four saves in the Plattsburgh nets and Nate Goss-Woliner was not credited with a save in net for St. Lawrence. It was Heighington’s 33rd-career shutout at Plattsburgh.

“The final shots were reasonable,” said Waterbury. “We didn’t have a lot of chances, but when we did, we were really dangerous. We tried to go with as quick a line-up as we could and we wanted to try and break in transition. We were so close to doing some good things.

“We did hit the post in the first half and so did they later on. They had a couple of near misses. I thought our back four played well, along with Jason Baker and Matt Hamilton at midfield. But everyone on the team gave a good effort.”

The Cardinals will have some time to rest before hosting a SUNYAC Tournament semifinal at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

“I told the players it was a good thing that they worked hard in conference regular season play,” said Waterbury. “They earned a first-round bye and don’t have to play on the weekend.”

The Cardinals will play either Geneseo or Cortland in the semifinals at the Field House Soccer Compex.
