Chiefs, Hornets move into 'B' semis

SARANAC — Saranac’s Amelia Jenks grabbed the game-winner with three minutes left in the game edging out Peru in girls’ Section VII Class B quarterfinal playoff soccer action Tuesday.

The Chiefs came out strong in the first half hoping to beat the Indians for the third time this season. Summer Gillespie tallied the first goal off a pass from Kaitlyn Bowman while a penalty kick by Amy LoTemplio put the chiefs up 2-0 to end the half.

“Kayla Napper earned the penalty kick for us,” Saranac coach Mary LoTemplio said. “She was really fighting for the ball in front of the net when she was fouled to give us the kick.”

Despite not scoring a goal against Saranac during the regular season, Ashley Carpenter scored for Peru a minute and a half into the second half off a pass from Mary Mazzella. A half an hour would pass before the Indians struck again to tie it with Nicole Breton scoring, again, off a pass from Mazzella.

“They (Peru) really turned up the intensity in the second half,” LoTemplio said. “They pulled out all the stops and we got out of our game.”

The deciding goal came when the Chiefs’ Amelia Jenks scored after a pass from Bowman during a scrum for the ball in front of the net.

Saranac will continue its playoff run Friday at 7 p.m. against Northeastern Clinton in Chazy.
