Huskies claim Sect. X Class B title

Press-Republican

GOUVERNEUR —  The Section X Class B regular-season football title was on the line today as the 5-1 Franklin Academy Huskies traveled to Gouverneur to take on the 5-1 Wildcats in the final regular-season weekend in the Northern Athletic Conference.

The Huskies built up a 34-0 lead on their way to a 34-14 win.

Franklin Academy scored first, taking the opening drive 70 yards on 10 plays. With the Huskies at the 18-yard line, John Picaro took a pass from Mitchell Gallagher and fought his way into the end zone.

Franklin Academy did score again in the period but had to fight back from several false-start penalties. The eight-play, 83-yard drive started with a 33-yard run by Tyrek Sneed and finished with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Gallagher to Harvey Smith.

The Gouverneur running game turned it up a notch on the next possession, keyed by a 27-yard run by Levi Love-Tupper. But the Huskies’ defense stiffened in the red zone, forcing a turnover on downs at the 15-yard line.

A sack by Franklin Academy’s Matt Ellison on Gouverneur’s next possession gave the Huskies the ball on their own 36. Five plays into the drive, a great effort by Picaro after catching a pass from Gallagher led to a 26-yard gain, which was followed by a 21-yard run by Gallagher. Sneed then went the last 11 yards for the touchdown.

The second half started with another fine drive by Gouverneur, with quarterback Mark Horne picking up good yardage, but again the Wildcats were unable to turn the drive into points. They were stopped at the 9-yard line on downs.

Malone then turned around and took the ball 91 yards on 11 plays with Gallagher running the ball in from the 15. Franklin Academy’s final score came on a 1-yard run by Sneed in the fourth quarter.

Gouverneur scored twice in the final period as the Huskies’ second defense got some playing time. Horne scored on a 1-yard run and a 16-yard run, both late in the game. The senior quarterback wound up with 176 yards rushing in a losing effort.

Gallagher ran for 146 yards and passed for 103, while Sneed ran for 115 yards.

The same two teams will play next Saturday in Malone in the Tier I playoffs. The winner of that game will play either Potsdam or Ogdensburg before heading on to regional play.
