Cardinals, Bengals battle to scoreless tie

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team again failed to find the back of the net Saturday.

But, at least the Cardinals kept their opponent from scoring.

Plattsburgh (5-9-1, 1-5-1) and Buffalo State (4-6-5, 2-1-4) battled to a scoreless overtime draw at the Field House Soccer Complex in SUNY Athletic Conference play.

Scoring chances were few and far between in the contest neither keeper was overly tested. Danielle Schmitt made five saves in the Plattsburgh nets and Linda Banfield four stops for Buffalo State.

The Bengals finished with a 19-7 advantage in shots, including an 11-4 edge in the second half, and a 6-3 margin in corner kicks.

The Cardinals, who dropped a 3-0 decision to Fredonia the day before, have scored only five goals in their last 11 games and three of those came in a 3-0 victory over Potsdam.

Plattsburgh honored seniors Renee Egan, Ashley McKenelley, Olivia Hopeck and Kristie Pageau prior to the start of the game.

A shootout was held following the regulation contest for a tie-breaker, if needed, in the standings. The Bengals scored on all four of their shots and recorded a 4-3 victory.

Saturday marked the final conference home game for the Cardinals who head out on the road this coming weekend for games at Geneseo on Friday and Brockport on Saturday.
