Airborne lines up big weekend

SOUTH PLATTSBURGH — Airborne Speedway’s headline division — the Ernie’s Discount Tools DIRTCar 358 Modifieds — will race for their biggest purse of the 2013 season at the International 500, July 20-21.

The Modifieds will compete in a Twin 50’s format — one segment Saturday, another Sunday — with combined finishes determining who receives the $3,000 winner’s check.

The Twin 50’s are a part of the biggest event in Airborne history, featuring the American Canadian Tour Late Models from throughout New England and Eastern Canada in a 300-lap race consisting of three 100-lap segments. A 100-lap non-qualifier event is also planned. A purse exceeding $140,000 will be on the line.

Airborne’s Sportsman Modifieds, Limited Late Models, Renegades and Mini Modifieds will also be in action during the two-day event.

“No question, the “500” will be the biggest event in Airborne history,” predicts Ernie Coulombe of Ernie’s Discount Tools.

“We are excited to see Airborne Speedway host ACT in July,” Kristy Kennedy of the North Country Chamber of Commerce said. “The inclusion of this coveted race to their schedule is great publicity for them and the Adirondack Coast. It is a fantastic way to introduce the area and the speedway to a new set of visitors and a nice boost to the local economy, benefiting lodging facilities, restaurants and retail outlets. As always, another job well-done by Mike Perrotte and the Airborne Speedway staff.”

“Reservations are on the rise,” Econo Lodge owner/operator Scott Carpenter said. “Summertime is a busy season anyway and with such a big race weekend as well as the FLW EverStart Bass Fishing tournament, I would stress early bookings which Econo Lodge offers at a discount.”
