CCC women lose to ACC

You can look back over the last 70 years at some of the area athletes and personalities who made headlines in area sports. Flashback will revive memories of great local athletes and outstanding team successes.

QUEENSBURY — Adirondack Community College held off Clinton Community College 69-66 Monday night to extend their winning streak to four games and avenge an earlier loss to the Cougars in women's basketball.

"They played really well. They're a much-improved team from the last time we played them," Clinton CC Coach Donna Dixon said.

The Timberwolves have not lost since dropping a 77-59 decision to Clinton on Nov. 6 in Plattsburgh. ACC improved to 4-2 while Clinton dropped to 4-3.

Clinton shot a poor 11-for-53 from the field.

"We did not shoot well. To get only 11 two's for the whole game is unheard of," Dixon stressed. "And they hurt us on the offensive glass.

"But our girls never quit."

Adirondack went up by eight at one point in the second half, but couldn't put Clinton away. In fact, the Cougars took a one-point lead with 9:11 to play.

The T'wolves regained the lead, but Andrea Garcia nailed a 3-pointer with 1:09 to play to get Clinton back within two. Brittany Godreau's trey with 27 seconds showing made it a one-point game, but the Cougars were forced to foul and Adirondack sank some crucial free throws.

Godreau led the Cougars with 22 points while Carissa Fournia netted 11 and Shannon Nutbrown, 10. Sami Stoughton, sidelined with a broken hand sustained in soccer, made her debut and scored six points.

The Cougars went 29-for-41 from the line in the physical battle. Adirondack was 18-for-28.

Nutbrown pulled down nine rebounds with Godreau and Fournia each grabbing seven. Joni Rae Coryea had five rebounds and seven assists.

Rachelle Black scored 21 points to lead Adirondack. Molly Congdon finished with 12 while Marley Starks and Tiffany Bezio added 11 apiece. Katie Pinkowski chipped in with 10 to give ACC five players in double figures.

Clinton CC returns to action next Tuesday at home with Paul Smith's College.
