Back-to-back shutouts by Cards

GENESEO — The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team accomplished a rarity over the weekend — back-to-back conference shutouts on the road.

Bryan Hince was in net for both as the Cardinals, following up on Friday night's 5-0 win over Brockport, skated to a 5-0 victory over Geneseo in State University of New York Athletic Conference action Saturday night.

"We haven't had back-to-back conference shutouts on the road since I've been here," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "And, we probably haven't had back-to-back shutouts in our hockey history.

"We played great defense all weekend, from our goaltender on out."

The Cardinals (6-0 overall, 5-0 SUNYAC) had four powerplays in the opening period and held the Knights (6-3, 2-2) without a shot on goal while ending the stanza with an 18-0 advantage.

But, all Plattsburgh State had to show for it was a 1-0 lead on Nick Rolls' goal, assisted by Phil Farrow, at 9:31. The goal came seconds after a Cardinal powerplay.

"I can't believe we didn't score more goals in the first period," Emery said. "We carried the play and moved our feet well. There were a lot of scrambles in front."

Plattsburgh State then killed off a five-on-three skating disadvantage for nearly the full two minutes in the second period before taking a 2-0 advantage.

"That was key for us," Emery said. "That goes back to playing good team defense."

Kyle VanderMale tallied his first goal of the season with a shot just under the crossbar at 12:53. Kyle Kudroch picked up the assist on the play.

The Cardinals broke it open with two goals in a 26-second span midway through the third.

Dylan Clarke scored an unassisted goal at 11:18 and then it was Kyle Taylor with his first goal as a Cardinal at 11:44, with assists going to VanderMale and Rolls.

The firsts continued at 15:06 when defenseman Mike Kavanagh got into the scoring act with his initial goal at Plattsburgh State. It was a power-play marker assisted by Dan Sliasis and Eric Greene.

Hince stopped all 19 shots he faced, including 13 in the second period. Jeff Pasemko made 32 stops for the Knights, who were outshot, 37-19.

The Cardinals return to the road this coming Saturday with a 7 p.m. SUNYAC contest at Potsdam.

"It's a North Country battle and I hope our fans will be there to help us," Emery said.
