POTSDAM — Chris Reynolds dreads to think about next year and a Chateaugay volleyball team without Annie Smith.

Fortunately, the Bulldogs will have the senior sensation around for one more week as they try to secure the school's first state championship in girls' volleyball.

Chateaugay (20-0) advanced to the Class D semifinal round Saturday and Sunday at the Glens Falls Civic Center with a 3-1 triumph over Mayfield in the quarterfinals at Potsdam High School. The Bulldogs won 28-26, 24-26, 25-11, 25-22.

Mayfield gave Chateaugay all it wanted, but could not stop six-foot Annie Smith.

"They didn't have an answer for her," Reynolds said.

"It was as close as it gets, but they didn't have an answer for Annie," Reynolds continued. "And we did a very good job getting her the ball. Our setters (Cindy Harrigan and Erica LaBombard) were outstanding today.

"Also, our serve receving was excellent, which let us get to our offense."

LaBombard served eight points with five aces and had 18 assists with four kills. Harrigan finished with 10 points, two aces, 15 assists, two kills and one block while Smith had 10 points, nine aces, 30 kills and two blocks.

Michelle Swanston chipped in with 14 points, five aces, four assists, six kills and three blocks with Stephanie Boyea adding eight points, three aces, two assists and two kills. Amanda Woodward contributed 13 points with two aces.

Woodward and Kiersten Zeldenrust also starred defensively for the Bulldogs.

Chateaugay, which swept Mayfield in last year's regionals, started slowly, falling behind before tieing midway through Game 1.

"We really played aggressively the last 4 or 5 points to give us the win. That was really key, getting that first win," Reynolds noted.

The Bulldogs jumped out in Game 2, but got too conservative and Mayfield capitalized.

"We got careful and gave the other team some free balls and they made us pay," Reynolds said.

The third game was Chateaugay's best with the Bulldogs prevailing 25-11.

"We played really crisp, smooth in that one," Reynolds added.

Chateaugay, going for the clincher, fell behind 17-13 in Game 4. After a timeout, the Bulldogs battled back to tie it at 21. It was even at 22 and then Chateaugay went ahead to stay 23-22.

"Annie Smith had two bullet serves to end it," Reynolds recalled.

"Mayfield was a tough team. Their hitting on all corners was great and their setters were excellent.

"If we let them get on offense, they were going to score. That was our plan going in, to avoid getting on defense. We had to be aggressive."

Chateaugay, which lost to Portville in last year's championship game, will enter four-team pool play Saturday morning with the two teams with the best records advancing to Sunday's championship round.
