NORTHFIELD, Vt. — The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team made it interesting at the end Sunday, but dropped a 75-74 non-conference decision at Norwich University in its 2009-10 season opener.

The Cardinals trailed, 71-64, with 38 seconds left before hitting a couple of three-pointers, including one by Lyndsey Moore, to close to within one point.

Plattsburgh State had an opportunity to win it after stealing the inbounds pass with 2.4 seconds remaining.

But the Cardinals, following a timeout, were unable to get off a good shot.

"We were actually down by eight with 1:19 left and caused some incredible havoc," said Plattsburgh State head coach Cheryl Cole. "The girls played really hard in the second half when they could have folded.

"The returning and young players showed a ton of heart. We will get better if we continue to work this hard. We had a few lapses today, but we put ourselves in a situation to win."

Jess Jaggars led Norwich with 17 points, while Ally Daniels and Kylie Cowens, who didn't miss a shot, added 13 apiece. Christine Daniels also hit double figures with 11.

"They're a veteran team and a good one," Cole said. "We had to put them on the line late in the game and they didn't miss their free throws.

"We got killed on the boards last year when we played them and held our own this time. We were also able to apply some tremendous pressure and cut down on our turnovers in the second half."

Taylor Amarando paced the Cardinals with 14 points, while Moore added 13. Molly Harte, Lindsey Larivee and Ashley Gyscek all chipped in with 10 each in a balanced attack.

"Larivee hit a big three-pointer and two free throws for us near the end," Cole said.

Amarando and Harte led the Cardinals with eight rebounds apiece and Cassidy dished out seven assists.

Norwich, which held a 36-30 lead at the half, shot 25-of-34 from the foul line while the Cardinals were eight-of-14.

Plattsburgh State returns to the court this coming weekend when it hosts the Cardinal Classic. The Cardinals host the Albany College of Pharmacy at 5 p.m. on Friday in the opening round.
