Freshmen step up for Cardinals

MORRISVILLE -- Freshmen accounted for eight points Saturday night in the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team's 8-3 win over Morrisville in State University of New York Athletic Conference play.

The Cardinals, playing their first road game of the season, improved to 3-0 in the conference and 4-0 overall.

Freshman Kyle Kudroch and Phil Farrow led the Cardinals with two goals each.

Shawn Dennis, Riley Hill, Dylan Clarke and freshman Vick Schlueter added a goal each.

"Our freshmen needed a game like this," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "It was good for their confidence to let them see how it's done and get some results. Kudroch and Schlueter worked their tails off."

Kudroch's unassisted goal, his first as a Plattsburgh State player, put the Cardinals ahead to stay at 5:44 of the first period. He added his second goal early in the third.

Schlueter then closed out the Plattsburgh State scoring with his first goal as a Cardinal.

The Cardinals held a 3-1 lead after one period and a 6-1 edge after two.

"We did what we had to in order to win the game," Emery said. "I give them credit. Morrisville doesn't have a lot of skill, but they work their tails off. They're not an easy team to play against.

"They got into some early penalty trouble and we have all our guys back on the powerplay this year. We took advantage of that and forced them to play catch-up hockey against us."

Timothy Dorak, Andrew Alarie and Evan Kernohan scored for the Mustangs (0-6, 0-4).

Bryan Hince turned away 18 of 21 shots in the Plattsburgh State nets. The Cardinals finished with a 47-21 advantage in shots on goal. Plattsburgh State went two-for-10 on the powerplay and the Mustangs, two-for-four.

The Cardinals are back on the road this coming weekend for SUNYAC contests at Brockport on Friday and Geneseo on Saturday.

"This is the start of a big stretch on the road for us and it was good to get the first one," Emery said. "We'll see how we do next weekend."
