Cardinal icemen face first road test

PLATTSBURGH -- It's a rare one-and-done weekend for the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team.

The Cardinals hit the road for the first time this season when they play at Morrisville tonight at 7 p.m. in State University of New York Athletic Conference play.

The Mustangs, who are playing in their third season as a provisional NCAA Division III member, are 0-2 in the SUNYAC and 0-4 overall thus far.

Cardinals' head coach Bob Emery, however, says his team can't take Morrisville for granted.

"You can't just look at Morrisville's record," Emery said. "They have played some teams tough and have been in almost every game so far.

"Plus, we have a target on our back and they (Morrisville) will be emotionally ready to play against us. We can't make mental mistakes."

The Mustangs did take Geneseo into overtime before losing, 2-1, and dropped a 5-3 contest at Manhattanville in non-conference play.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, are 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC following home wins over Fredonia (5-2) and Buffalo State (4-2) last weekend.

"What do we take out of last weekend,? Emery responded. "We know that the SUNYAC is getting more challenging and game results within and out of the conference are getting much better."

Emery has an experienced team, but continues to inject freshmen into the mix.

"We're taking a look at everyone to determine what our best line-up will be," he said. "I do know it's going to take more than 12 forwards and six defensemen this year in order to be successful."

Plattsburgh State defenseman Ward Smith, who had his "bell rung" in the Fredonia game and carried off the ice by stretcher, will not play this weekend. Emery lists Smith as being day-to-day.

Next weekend, the Cardinals will travel to Brockport and Geneseo. Plattsburgh State will play six games on the road before returning home for SUNYAC contests against Oswego and Cortland on Dec. 5-6 to close out the opening semester.
