POTSDAM — The Chateaugay Bulldogs won a battle of Top-10 teams Friday night to advance to the state playoffs in girls' soccer.

Chateaugay defeated Harrisville 2-1 to capture the Section X Class D championship, giving the Bulldogs two girls' sectional titles this fall. The Chateaugay volleyball went undefeated to also advance to the state tournament.

Chateaugay, ranked fifth in the state in Class D, never trailed Harrisville, the seventh-ranked team in the state.

"We knew it was going to be a battle," Chateaugay Coach Steve Lang acknowledged. "It was Harrisville's first loss and they had given up only three goals before tonight."

Nikki Cook-Paige accounted for both Chateaugay goals. She put the Bulldogs up just 7:37 into the game with Kelly Favaro assisting. Favaro pushed a through ball to Cook-Paige who broke the defense to go one-on-one with Harrisville keeper Patty Coloney.

"She (Cook-Paige) tapped it in the short side, to the corner and low to the ground," recalled Lang.

Harrisville countered with a goal with only 2:17 left in the half. Emily Lesperance took a direct kick that deflected off Chateaugay keeper Amanda Wilcox and Mary LaPlatney emerged from a skirmish in front of the net to put in the rebound at 37:43.

Cook-Paige, who had only five goals and just one in her last seven games, struck again midway through the second half. Marissa Cook took the ball down the left wing, drawing the defense to her, and then slid the ball over to Cook-Paige, who karate-kicked the ball in from eight yards out for the eventual game-winner at 24:19.

"All three were nice goals," commented Lang.

"Both teams threatened off-and-on after that; there was a lot of action both ways."

Fullback Amanda Johnston saved Chateaugay with 10 minutes to play. With Wilcox out of the goal, Johnston rushed in from the weakside to top a Harrisville attempt. Chateaugay also had three splendid opportunities in close, but was turned away.

Johnston led a strong effort by the Chateaugay defense to limit Harrisville to the one goal. The Pirates outshot the Bulldogs 15-12 with Wilcox making six saves and Coloney, five, for Harrisville.

Raquel Fowler stood out at center half for the Bulldogs while Marissa Cook and Nikki Cook-Paige were stellar on offense.

Chateaugay won the section championship in 2004 and '05, advancing to the state finals in '04.

Chateaugay (17-1-0) will meet the winner of today's Section VII championship between Chazy and Lake Placid in Plattsburgh. The regional playoff will be next Saturday in Plattsburgh with the winner of that game advancing to the Final Four.
