PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team tuned up for tonight's early-season State University of New York Athletic Conference showdown with Oswego by skating to a 5-1 win over Cortland at the Stafford Ice Arena Friday night.

Five players scored a goal each as the Cardinals improved their SUNYAC and overall record to 3-0.

Oswego, meanwhile, had no trouble in Potsdam as it rolled past the Bears by an 8-1 score.

"Our puck management was great in the offensive zone tonight, but we had too many turnovers in the neutral zone," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery.

"We have to get the puck out of our zone and neutral zone better, and get it in deep somehow — whether we skate it in or dump it in. We have to do a better job against Oswego."

The Cardinals held a 1-0 lead after one period when Chris Wieland, one of eight freshmen in the line-up for Plattsburgh State, one-timed a pass in the slot past Cortland netminder Doug Danzi at 14:22.

Plattsburgh State then quickly made it 3-0 with two goals in the first two minutes of the second stanza. Kyle Kudroch wristed home a shot from inside the slot at 1:32 and Eric Satim tallied on a breakaway, shortly after, at 1:48.

The Red Dragons (2-2, 1-2) cut their deficit to 3-1 at 12:36 of the second on Patrick Palmisano's power-play goal up top to beat Cardinals' goaltender Ryan Williams.

Emery would take a timeout a little later.

"I don't know if Cortland rebounded or we stopped skating after we got the 3-0 lead," Emery said. "We have to learn to play 60 minutes of hockey and not worry about the score.

"We played great hockey in getting the 3-0 lead. But, we didn't play like that after."

That, however, would be as close as Cortland would get.

Vick Schlueter was all alone at the side of the net to make it 4-1 at 1:19 of the third and Patrick Jobb tipped a pass into the net from in close at 6:20 to finish off the scoring.

"We always want to get scoring balance," said Emery. "(Eric) Satim played a great game tonight."

Plattsburgh State finished with a 34-20 shot advantage. Williams stopped 19 of 20 shots, including one on a breakaway. Danzi made 29 saves on 34 shots.

The Cardinals also did a good job blocking shots.

"We always say if you block a shot, you're stopping a potential goal," Emery said.

In other SUNYAC action Friday night, Brockport edged out a 4-3 victory over Morrisville in overtime and Fredonia was a 4-2 winner over Buffalo State. In non-conference play, Geneseo skated to a 4-3 win over Hobart.
