PLATTSBURGH — With State University of New York Athletic Conference rival Oswego coming to town on Saturday, it's important for the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team to pay close attention to the matter at hand.
And, that's tonight when the Cardinals (2-0, 2-0) host high-scoring Cortland at 7 p.m. at the Stafford Ice Arena.
"Cortland does a great job getting the puck to the net and we have to do a good job making sure our goalie sees the puck and take away rebound opportunities," said Cardinals' head coach Bob Emery. "They will shoot the puck from anywhere."
The Red Dragons (2-1, 1-1) skated to a 7-5 victory at Fredonia and then dropped a 6-5 contest at Buffalo State last weekend to open conference play.
Junior forward Jarrett Gold (4-5-9), senior forward Patrick Palmisano (4-3-7) and sophomore forward Jake Saville (1-5-6) are the leading scorers for Cortland in three games. The Red Dragons have used three goaltenders, with sophomore Mike Reilly having a 2-0 record.
"We're breaking it down into six periods of hockey this weekend and our goal is to win every one of them," Emery said. "We have to take one period at a time.
"If we lose our focus in the present, we're doing ourselves an injustice and we could find ourselves in hot water."
Plattsburgh State opened its season last weekend at home with a 4-2 win over Geneseo and a 4-1 victory over Brockport.
"In the second period of the Geneseo game, we did what we're used to doing," Emery said. "We made good decisions and we kept our feet moving.
"Puck possession is always key, but it's real important to have good puck management and safety. That's our focus and it will continue to be our focus."
Oswego, meanwhile, is off a 3-1 overall start. The Lakers split a couple of non-conference games with Elmira to begin the season, winning by a 7-2 score and then dropping a 2-1 decision.
Oswego began it SUNYAC campaign with road wins at Buffalo State (4-1) and Fredonia (7-4) a weekend ago.
Sophomore forward Eric Selleck (3-7-10), junior forward Chris Laganiere and junior forward Justin Fox (2-6-8) are off to good scoring starts for the Lakers, who play at Potsdam tonight.
Sophomore Paul Beckwith has done all the goaltending thus far, with a 3-1 record and 2.25 GAA.
Following this weekend, the Cardinals head out on the road for the first time this season when they play at Morrisville on Saturday at 7 p.m.
