Cards wear down Buffalo State

PLATTSBURGH -- The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team couldn't shake Buffalo State Saturday night.

However, it wasn't for a lack of trying.

Ryan Corry's power-play goal at 13:29 of the second period did hold up as the Cardinals skated to a 4-2 victory in State University of New York Athletic Conference play at the Stafford Ice Arena.

Dylan Clarke's empty-net goal with 1:02 left in the third period sealed the win as the Cardinals improved to 2-0 in the SUNYAC and 3-0 overall.

"We played a pretty good game tonight," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "I tip my hat to Buffalo State. They were sacrificial in blocking shots and played hard for 60 mnutes. I told their coach (Nick Carriere) that after the game.

"But, we persevered and did what we had to in order to win the game. All-in-all, it was a good weekend for us at home getting four points."

Corry's goal broke a 2-all tie and gave the Cardinals the lead for good.

Buffalo State then ran into some penalty problems in the third. Plattsburgh State didn't score on the powerplay in the final stanza, but still played well before Clarke stole the puck at center ice and scored into an open net to apply the clincher.

"We played smart with the lead," Emery said. "We were able to take time off the clock by getting the puck down low into the corners."

The Cardinals grabbed the early lead at 4:45 of the first period when Eric Greene had his original shot blocked, but scored from between the slots when the puck deflected back to him.

But, Buffalo State (2-4, 1-1) drew even at 13:45 after Plattsburgh State goaltender Bryan Hince came out of his net to get the puck, only to have it eventually end up on Jim Durham's stick, who then put it into an open net.

"Their first goal was kind of a flukey one," said Emery. "Maybe it would have been a different game as far as momentum goes if they wouldn't have scored on the play."

Nick Rolls' power-play goal at 10:20 of the second period put the Cardinals back on top, only to have the Bengals' Nicholas Petriello tie it, at 2-all, 24 seconds later.

Less than three minutes later, however, Corry put the Cardinals back on top -- this time to stay -- as he became the third Plattsburgh State defenseman to score a goal in the game.

Plattsburgh State held a 44-28 advantage in shots on goal, including a 19-15 edge in a high-flying first period. Hince made 26 saves, while Zach Grasley stopped 40 shots for the Bengals. Both goaltenders played well.
