PLATTSBURGH -- The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team was a quick one last season.
Expect more of the same this year.
"We had good quickness last year," said head coach Bob Emery, after watching the team's Annual Red/White Game at the Stafford Ice Arena Saturday night. "And, I think we're going to be even quicker this year.
"I like what I see."
Emery was also pleased with some other areas.
"We want to get pucks to the net this year," he said. "That's going to be a focus of ours. And, we did a good job focusing on getting the puck to the net tonight.
"The competition out there on the ice was great. It was so competitive that we have three of our seven defensemen with injuries. Hopefully, they will be ready for the start of the season. But, that's something that had to be done. We used the game as a measuring stick."
For the record, the Red Team was a 6-4 winner, with senior C.J. Tozzo leading the way with three goals, including an empty-netter at the end.
"Tozzo had a great year last season," Emery said. "He's going to have an even better season if he becomes better at finishing."
The Cardinals open their 2007-08 season this coming weekend, hosting 7 p.m. State University of New York Athletic Conference contests each night against Morrisville State, the new entry into the conference, on Friday and Saturday.
"I'm pleased with what I saw tonight and I'm optimistic about the season," Emery said. "I know what we have, but I don't know what the other teams have."
