Russian baseball team to practice in Placid

LAKE PLACID "" Russia's top baseball team, on tour in the eastern United States, will stop in Lake Placid Wednesday, July 25, to visit the Olympic sites managed by the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA).

Their itinerary will include a stop at the Wednesday Wet and Wild freestyle show set to occur at the Olympic Ski Jumping Complex at 1 p.m.

The Russians are in the midst of a 20-game schedule designed to prepare the team for the European Championships to be held in September in Barcelona, Spain. They will play Meron's Expos Friday at Chip Cummings Field on the Plattsburgh State campus.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of baseball in Russia. Since 1992, 11 players from the former Soviet Union have signed minor-league baseball contracts to play in the United States. Last year, the Minnesota Twins signed lefthanded pitcher Nikolay Lobanov to a minor-league deal.

The Russians will practice in Lake Placid on Wednesday, July 25, from 2:30""5 p.m. at the North Elba Show Grounds on Rt. 73 outside Lake Placid.
