SCHENECTADY — After winning 14 coins flips in a row for home team, Clinton County Mariners head coach John Flynn lost one Wednesday.

And it proved to be an omen of bad things to come.

The Mariners were eliminated from the American Legion District IV Playoffs with a 12-5 setback to the Saratoga Stampede in the tourney semifinals.

Clinton County fell behind 3-1 after one and trailed 7-3 when the Stampede put the game away with five runs in the sixth.

"That inning killed us," Flynn said. "We still don't know well enough how to compete down here. And I think we were a tired team with all the trips we made down here.

"But on a positive note, we're losing only two players, and we were much more successful this year by going 2-2 in the tournament. I thought we were ready to play today. We were hoping to make it to Friday."

Pat Shaughnessy led the Mariners with three singles, and Kyle Rascoe added a double and single. The Mariners had nine hits in all and had a lot of baserunners.

"We left way too many men on base — 14 in all," Flynn said. "We struck out only two times in the game and hit the ball. But we hit it right at them. We couldn't get the big hit when we needed to."

Matt Coleman went the first seven innings to get the win, and Alex LaFountain was the Mariners' starting and losing pitcher. Clinton County used four pitchers.

Chris Curcio, Shane Matthews and Leejay Pollacci rapped out two hits each for Saratoga.

"Alex was never able to get in sync," Flynn said.

"We didn't hold guys on well, and they were very aggressive on the bases — right to the end. And they found the holes when they hit the ball."
