GLENS FALLS — Just how bad was it for the Clinton County Mariners American Legion baseball team Thursday?

"The best part of the day was when I went to the Golden Corral to eat with my wife and two daughers," said Mariners head coach John Flynn.

"We just didn't play very good baseball today. We didn't pitch well, which is unusual for us, and we didn't play good defense."

The Mariners (15-9), after two one-run victories in the Coopers Cave Tournament, dropped a 9-7 decision to the Colchester, Vt. Cannons and then a 9-4 setback to Hudson to fall to 2-2 in the event.

"After what happened today, we have to beat Pittsfield, Mass on Friday (today) and hope to win some tie-breakers in order to make it to Saturday," Flynn said. "But, we definitely have to beat Pittsfield and then see what happens.

"We've scored 23 runs in the tournament, but have now given up 28 after today."

The Mariners, against the Cannons, trailed right from the start as starting and losing pitcher Matt Seymour wasn't able to get out of the top of the third when Colchester took a 6-1 lead.

Clinton County, however, did battle back to within 6-4 after three, but could never get any closer.

"We didn't pitch very well and we didn't get ahead in the count," Flynn said. "We also made some costly errors. We were flat and we just didn't play a good game."

Pat Shaughnessy led the Mariners with three hits, including a double. Frank Buksa added two hits and Brett Bosley a two-run triple.

"We did fight back in the game and hit some balls hard," Flynn said.

Then, against Hudson, starter Matt Brown had a difficult time of it as he gave up four runs in the second and four more in the fourth when the Mariners fell behind, 9-0.

"They were a good team," Flynn said.

Matt Leta was the lone Mariner with two hits. Clinton County scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the seventh when Alex LaFountain singled, Jordan Bezio singled, Casey Letourneau rapped a RBI double, Shaughnessy a two-run double and Leta a RBI single. Two walks loaded the bases, but Hudson got the final out to end it.

"We rallied, but it was too little, too late," Flynn said. "I thought we were on a little bit of a roll of late, but today was not a good one for us."
