PLATTSBURGH — The inaugural season of the Upstate NY Spring Football League officially concluded Sunday with the league's first International Bowl.

The Malone Thunder and Lightning and Plattsburgh Panthers' JV squads took on Ontario-based Cornwall and Tagwi teams, respectively, and Malone and Plattsburgh's Varsity-level teams finished the day with a matchup of their own.

It was a foundation in a program League Director Fred Gagnier hopes will expand to five-to-seven local spring teams next season so the league champions can face the winners of Cornwall's league at the same event.

Peru football head coach Larry Ewald, who was presented with an Inspiration Award from Gagnier in the final game, said the event was a "good start" and that he was impressed with Gagnier's dedication.

Despite being a high school coach who weighs in the concern of injuries in fall play's offseason, he said spring football gives players "an avenue to hone their skills."

He added, "Kids play basketball and other sports all year round, so why not football?"

Sunday, The Candian teams swept JV play as Tagwi defeated Plattsburgh, 46-6, and Cornwall beat Malone, 20-12.

Malone, however, defeated Plattsburgh in varsity action, 30-14.

"The kids, from all sides, played hard," Gagnier said. "What I really liked about it was that no one gave up. The defensive play was very high."

Jim Amorelli was also presented with the Inspiration Award.

Nate Harrington, who was named Offensive MVP of the game, caught Plattsburgh's only touchdown pass on an 80-yard bomb from Nick St. Clair. Tagwi's Dominique Martell was the game's MVP and teammate Tanner Rutley was Defensive MVP at middle linebacker.

John and Chris Picaro connected on a deep pass at the end of the game a tackle inside the 5-yard line prevented Malone from a chance at tying it up. Chris picked up Offensive MVP honors and John Defensive. Ryan Regnier of Cornwall was the game MVP as he scored on an 80-yard kickoff return and again on a running play.

He was also in on nearly every tackle on defense. Corey Prue added a touchdown for Malone.

Malone quarterback and defensive back Jacob Gravel had a monster game, rushing in for a touchdown, intercepting on defense for a score, kicking all of the extra points and splitting the uprights on a field goal.

Brett Gagnier added a touchdown pass for a score.

Gravel was named game MVP, and Plattsburgh quarterback Jason Lavarnway was Offensive MVP as he rushed for two scores and had a few long completions.

Jordan Cosgrove was Defensive/Special Teams MVP.

Cosgrove took a punt return 84 yards for a touchdown and recovered a muffed punt early in the game.
