Miners host 2nd-place Expos

PLATTSBURGH — The Lyon Mountain Miners, who came within a couple of outs from sweeping the first-place Fourth Ward Cardinals last Sunday in Champlain Valley Baseball League play before settling for a split, are back at it today when they host the second-place Meron's/Renzi's Expos in a noon doubleheader.

David Waldron pitched the fourth-place Miners (7-6) to a 5-1 win in the opener and Lyon Mountain held a 5-2 lead in the second game when the Cardinals rallied for six runs in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-5 win. Nick Chase and Scott Baker each had three hits, including a home run, on the day for Lyon Mountain.

The Expos (9-5), meanwhile, got a three-hit shutout from Mike Bergman in a 9-0 win over the Hockey Plus/Loreman's Padres in the first game of two in Saranac. Meron's/Renzi's then jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first in the second contest only to fall 10-5. Bergman had two doubles and Mike Bordeau two singles for the Expos in Game 2.

The Cardinals (10-3) are home at Lefty Wilson Field to take on the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx (4-10), with hopes of moving closer towards clinching the regular season title.

Adam Porter's 3-run homer in the bottom of the seventh gave the Cardinals their second-game win over the Miners last Sunday. Jason Perry's 2-run single tied the game. Tory Bouyea had two of the Cardinals' three hits in Game 1.

The Timberjaxx have fallen on hard times of late and dropped both contests to the Fourth Ward A's (2-12) last weekend — 3-0 in the first game and 10-8 in eight innings in the second. Jacques DeMars led the Timberjaxx with three hits in Game 2, while Jim Knight Jr. added a home run and single.

The final doubleheader today has the Hockey Plus/Loreman's Padres (9-5) at South Acres Field against the A's, who picked up their first two wins of the season last Sunday.

Reilly Lawless tossed a three-hit shutout in the first game, and Michael Howard led the offense with three hits. In Game 2, Lawless supplied the offensive punch with three hits, including two home runs.

The Padres, who still have road doubleheaders against the Cardinals and Miners remaining, gained a split last Sunday with the Expos as Mark Eggleston went 4-for-4, including a home run and four RBI, and Donny Coolidge had two singles and a double in support of winning pitcher Joey Painter.
