Hornets knock off Saranac; Peru, Ti, Placid, NCCS, Moriah also win
PLATTSBURGH -- The Plattsburgh High School baseball team, after opening the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference season with two losses, has made its way back into the Division I title picture.
The Hornets scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday and defeated Division I-leading Saranac, 7-5, at Lefty Wilson Field.
The outcome left the Chiefs at 6-2, while the Hornets are 5-2. Beekmantown, which has a 5-3 record, missed out on an opportunity to tie for the division lead with a 3-1 loss to Peru.
Pat Shaughnessy picked up the win in relief of Jon Edwards, while Nick Desroches went the distance in taking the setback.
PHS grabbed a 5-0 lead in the first inning on Shaughnessy's three-run homer and Andrew Manabat's two-run single.
Saranac, however, battled back to eventually tie it with a run in the top of the sixth.
But, in the home half of the sixth, PHS scored twice on a walk, sacrifice, groundout, walk, Brandon Hatch's infield hit to load the bases and an infield error.
Shaughnessy and Hatch led the Hornets with two hits apiece.
Richard Chase and Desroches rapped out two hits each for the Chiefs, with Desroches getting a double. Bryan Tedford chipped in with a solo homer and John Canning a two-run single.
"We came out blazing in the first inning," said PHS head coach Jim Manchester. "But give Saranac credit; they hung in there and Desroches got stronger as the game went on."
