FREDONIA — Plattsburgh State men's hockey coach Bob Emery wasn't looking for style points following the Cardinals' 4-2 State University of New York Athletic Conference win at Fredonia Friday night.
"A win is a win and this has never been an easy place for us to play," he said.
"I'm not going to dwell on the negatives. The positive is that we found a way to win. It was a great win for us on the first game of a tough road trip. I'm not going to pick the game apart."
The top-ranked Cardinals (13-1-2, 8-0-1) never trailed.
Plattsburgh State's Andrew Willock opened the scoring at 6:27 of the first period before Jordan Oye's power-play goal tied it for the Blue Devils (4-10-3, 2-5-2) at 10:11.
But, freshman Kyle Kudroch put Plattsburgh State back in front, this time to stay, at 13:34 when he made it 2-1.
"You don't want to fall behind a team like Fredonia," Emery said. "They will go into a shell."
Joey Wilson's power-play goal with 11:40 gone in the second then put the Cardinals up, 3-1.
Despite holding a 17-7 shot advantage in the third, Plattsburgh State's lead was sliced to one when Fredonia scored its second power-play goal, this one by Bryan Goudy at the 4:02 mark.
Eric Satim, however, sealed the win with an empty-net marker with 48 seconds remaining.
"We did turn it on in the third period, but their goaltender (Pat Street) was unbelievable," Emery said.
Bryan Hince turned away 28 of 30 shots in net for the Cardinals, who held a 35-30 shot advantage. Street finished with 31 stops on 34 shots for the Blue Devils.
There were only eight penalties whistled in the game — four on each side.
"It was an up-and-down skating game," said Emery. "We still need to get better in certain areas. We have to do a better job in our opponent's transition.
"We also have to be a little better mentally and bury our chances in the third."
The Cardinals play at Buffalo State tonight at 7 p.m. The Bengals and Potsdam skated to a high-scoring 6-all overtime tie Friday night.
"If we get two more points against Buffalo State, it will be a great weekend for us," Emery said.
