Speakout: Jan. 31, 2013

To the man in a black truck who stopped to help tow me out of my driveway, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You were the only one who stopped instead of gawking and driving by like the dozen of cars before you.

Thank you to all those who continue to display their outdoor Christmas lights after Christmas. Christmas is a beginning, not an end, and the week between Christmas and New Year’s is the perfect time to relax and enjoy the true serenity of the season.

Thank you to all the road crews who worked tirelessly to clear the roads as best as possible. It was a relief to have relatively passable roads by late Thursday afternoon affter the big storm and clear main roads Friday morning.

After reading the Essex County backup-generator story, I find it hard to believe that the director would want to buy a backup for the backup generator. That will result in two generators that are not properly maintained.

Please shovel your sidewalks after it snows; makes it very difficult to walk. Especially if you’re blind and walking the streets.

To all who have commented about the land auction involving parcels in Altona purchased by the Indians, you obviously do not have a clue as to how they came to exist in Altona or what the original agreement defined. Its taxable land.

Best opinions of 2012 in the P-R: Rabbi Marc Gellman, Colin Read, letters from Harold Brohinsky and J.S. Waterhouse, and the abused referee Editor Lois Clermont. Thank you for making hospitable and hopeful my reading of the Press-Republican.

Thank you to my neighbors who plowed our property when we were gone on vacation.

A stronger background check would not have helped Sandy Hook. Most teachers can pass background checks. He took his mother’s weapons. A guard, metal detector and all packages/bags looked into at the entrance of schools would be more helpful.
