Speakout: April 3, 2014

School board continues to show their allegiance to the teachers union. Claiming again underfunded they talk about cutting staff and programs instead of obvious cost savings, like switching medical plan, saving millions; eliminating steps and medical buybacks or retirement buyouts. Lots of ways to save.

Hunters have shot most of the does in Altona. I have not seen a single deer in these woods in months.

Want to improve school performance? Tie a kid’s driver’s license and a parent’s welfare check to school grades. Watch performance skyrocket. Quit blaming teachers and schools for lousy parenting.

It’s nice to see Dr. Dahlen make Irishman of the Year. He has made a great impact on the community and does well at what he does. I still remember when his office was on Brinkerhoff Street.

No one wants to read about politics all the time in Speakout either. Boring!

So educators march outside Betty Little’s office protesting public school spending. They just have to look in the mirror to recognize the problem. This is a union that supported change. I guess they didn’t want that change to apply to them. It’s time for a major overhaul of public education.

I don’t know about others, but I am getting tired of sending the Obamas on extravagant vacations. The president sending his wife, daughters and mother in-law to China is just plain wrong. The cost of this trip could feed hundreds of starving children.

There was a Girl Scout troop outside a store selling cookies. The leaders were smoking. The scouts, along with the leaders, were shaking their behind at customers. Very unacceptable.

I received my student’s six-week progress report from Plattsburgh City School District. Out of the seven courses, only two teachers actually gave a grade or made a comment. I expect more from our professionals.
