Speakout: Sept. 25, 2009
Appearance
Sounds like you are a little shallow. I'm glad to see that you have better things to do besides judging others based on their appearances. I'm a great mom, who's a little overweight with tattoos. That doesn't define me as a mom. Grow up and realize this world doesn't revolve around the way you think it should be. Not everyone is a size 2. Maybe you should focus on the parents who are yelling and screaming at their children and not at what the good parents look like.
Police
A big thank-you to the State Police for a job well done! You don't hear that enough, and I want you to know I appreciate seeing you all out there, not only on holiday weekends but every day. Thank you for making the North Country a safer place to live.
Child care
I can't help but wonder who funds this child-care program I just read about. I hope it's not more of the taxpayers' money. Frankly, if you can't deal with the "stress" from the multi-tasking job of motherhood, don't have kids. I'm looking for a group that will help me cope with the stress from ever-increasing taxes and the likelihood that I will be working well into my senior years to support these types of mollycoddling programs. I raised my children to contribute to society.
APA
The Lewis farms are exactly right in saying what the APA are. They are wealthy. The average land owner cannot fight these dictators. They have hurt a lot of people. It was a big mistake letting these people in the North Country. They should be abolished. Since the APA has the power to tell people what to do with their lands, they should pay the taxes on the land. I congratulate the Lewis Farms on the right victory over the APA, and I hope the APA can be made to pay the Lewis Farms legal fees they had to spend because of the APA's unfairness.
Caps
I would like to make a remark about something that has bothered me for years. We go into these nice restaurants and we look around and see at least 6 to 8 men with their caps on (some of them on backwards). I think this is so insulting to the other diners. These men were not brought up with manners. I really think the management should refuse to serve them until their caps are removed. But I am sure this letter is a waste of time because I am sure there is not a restaurant who will do it.
Transactions
When people purchase or a person who sells property, you have it published in the paper. To me, this is an invasion of personal and private matter. I feel it is wrong. I do not go through the "Property Transactions." I know some people do read it and have heard comments and it has created problems for the buyer or seller. Printing the amount of purchase is also wrong. When people are selling or buying, I feel what should be in the contract is a clause stating that it should not be advertised in any newspaper no matter what state and county it is in.
Reporter
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Press-Republican's Dan Heath for his reporting of the shootings of the LaBombard and Selkirk animals and pets. I believe that his articles gave the public a greater awareness of a dangerous time. Good job, Dan! People are really scared. Special thanks go to the New York State Police for their thorough investigation and quick solving of this disgusting crime.
Candidates
Now is the time to pick your candidates for the fall elections. Make sure to attend meetings and try to make sure that they play fair and by the rules.
Blunder
I went to a so-called chicken barbecue dinner dance. What a blunder. They would not let the band inside to play, which is where they should have been. If people wanted to dance, they had to dance in the grass. Two couples tried it and quit. How they expected elderly people to dance was a very unfair thing. Unfair to the good band playing there. Many people left. They only thought about getting chickens being sold.
North Stars
When the North Stars win a game, we see a big headline and the story of the game played. When they lose, nothing or a little article is in the paper. For us fans that can't make every game we would still like to read about the game. We know you're not going to win all the time so be fair in reporting all your games.
Elections
I think there is a conflict of interest when a man runs for town supervisor and his wife is already in a seat on the town council. She should step down from her seat on the town board if he wants to run for town supervisor. Even if it is not mandated by law, they, as a couple should respect the ethics of the situation, take the high road and do the right thing.
Early birds
The reader who wrote about yard sale early birds is right. I moved here from the south, where garage sales start at a decent time and no one comes early. Imagine my horror when, after we advertised for 8 a.m., there was a Buick in the driveway at 6:45 and a wild-looking woman peering through our windows. My children were scared. I told her to leave; she gave me a dirty look but left. She came back later, looked around, asked for records or old stuff, then told me my prices were too high and clumped off. Very nervy, and I was shocked. From now on, I donate items to a good cause.
Mass
Wonderful Mass in French at St. Peter's Church, Plattsburgh, celebrated on September 13th, commemorating Champlain's discovery of our lake 400 years ago and the French heritage of that parish. We look forward to a Latin Mass commemorating our unifying Roman Catholic heritage, which we've lost.
Flags
I would like to know who's responsible for the flags in Beekmantown? The whole lot of ya fell asleep on the job on 9/11. You should be very ashamed of yourselves for not putting the flags at half staff. All the firefighters killed — no honor at our fire station, ole glory flying high. Let's not leave the school and town hall out of the mix; they are just as guilty. The VFW had the only honor in town that day — good job, Post 1466.
Bakery
Last Sunday about noontime, I dropped my wife off at a local bakery to pick some dinner rolls. She was told that the only way she could get rolls was to order them ahead of time. Strange. A bakery that doesn't have rolls on hand. She also told me that there were only a couple loaves of bread and very few doughnuts. Strange again. However, she did say that there was plenty of deli meat at this bakery. I am so confused.
Destruction
I was floored when I read the story about the arrest of the 9- and 10-year-olds for the destruction of someone else's property. It is 100 percent the parents' fault. These children are not old enough to be alone or unsupervised in any situation. There is clearly neglect here. Let's just hope this neglect does not go unpunished and the lives and future of these children is not destroyed. Shame on the parents.
Rally
A Jeers to the Press Republican is certainly in order for this past weekend's coverage of the Washington, D.C., march. Tens of thousands of Americans took time and made their own way to rally in Washington, and your paper gives it page 2 coverage on Sunday. A story about the Beatles takes front page over the March on Washington? How much more nauseating can you media people get? It is frightening to see how there really is no longer a free and objective press in this country. Shame on you. I will no longer purchase your paper.
Head
Cumberland Head residents, beware of the sewer system that is being proposed. Just investigate the fiasco of the Moffitt Road water system. Cost overruns, incompetent engineering and the complete mess on the southeast side of the Moffitt Road. Driveways torn up since June, front yards left in a mess, ditches destroyed, complaints to the town are ignored. Consolidated water district users will all pay.
Siren
First, I need to say that I completely support our fire department. However, I am wondering why the South Plattsburgh Fire Department feels the need to run the siren at all hours of the day and night. In this day and age, with pagers, cell phones and the like, why do we need the siren as a way of calling volunteers to the firehouse for a fire call? It disturbs the families that live around the fire station throughout the day and night. Maybe the siren no longer needs to be used. Maybe people could have a good night's sleep instead.
