Speakout: June 2, 2009

DELAYS

Haven't seen your Speakout? There are a few possible reasons.

We won't publish Speakouts that are longer than 100 words or that we consider libelous or inappropriate, including personal attacks, merchant complaints that we can't verify and court matters.

Also, once a topic seems to have run its course, we will cut those for a time. The point has been made, and writers are always welcome to send a signed letter to the editor of no more than 300 words for publication on the Editorial page.

Lastly, if you haven't seen your Speakout yet, you might just need a little patience. It has proven hugely popular, and most days, we have hundreds of inches waiting to get in. News articles have priority, but we try to get in a little Speakout each day.

If you have any questions, call News Editor Lois Clermont at 565-4131.

Generation
Obama best drop his pro-abortion policies if he expects the next generation to be around to pay for his expensive programs.

Driving
To the writer of the "Mooers fire truck" in Altona May 9. I'm glad to see the local fire department has weekly driver training. I'm sure it is encouraged that all drivers improve their skills and safety through genuine driver training. More hours on the road leads to better defensive driving in emergencies. I would pay for that any day.

Day games
Can someone tell me why Tupper Lake only has night football games ever since they got lights? I loved going to afternoon ball games in the fall.

Brown
In your May 23 issue, Naj Wikoff tells us In My Opinion: John Brown Deserves Brighter Light; "... the complicated man ... who rose above his many demons to lift others out of slavery." Was John Brown on the right side of the slavery issue? Yes. Could his actions in attempts to free slaves be considered those of a certifiable nut-case? Yes. At Harpers Ferry and particularly at Pottawatomie Creek, Brown's actions were an answer to the classic question: Does the end justify the means? An emphatic "no." Martin Luther King would heartily agree.

Recognition
Thank goodness someone at the P-R is finally bringing John Brown the recognition he deserves. In the North Country we have a history rich in personal sacrifice for those past injustices against humanity (Underground Railroad). The North Country should be proud that our ancestors were on the right side of history. I would like to see more public memorials to this fact. A Civil War dead memorial would be a great start. I'm thankful our ancestors practiced tolerance by putting their life on the line for their fellow man. Just like their posterity, they were some of America's finest.
