Speakout: May 30, 2009

DELAYS

Haven't seen your Speakout? There are a few possible reasons.

We won't publish Speakouts that are longer than 100 words or that we consider libelous or inappropriate, including personal attacks, merchant complaints that we can't verify and court matters.

Also, once a topic seems to have run its course, we will cut those for a time. The point has been made, and writers are always welcome to send a signed letter to the editor of no more than 300 words for publication on the Editorial page.

Lastly, if you haven't seen your Speakout yet, you might just need a little patience. It has proven hugely popular, and most days, we have hundreds of inches waiting to get in. News articles have priority, but we try to get in a little Speakout each day.

If you have any questions, call News Editor Lois Clermont at 565-4131.

Ripoff
Elderly folks, beware. I am told that a mother and daughter team prey on elderly people to acquire their antiques and fine things. Further, I am also told that at least one lady was forced to obtain a restraining order against these two, as they were constantly harassing her by frequent phone calls and visits. This is presently happening to a dear lady I know. We've all heard of ambulance chasers; well, these two must be estate chasers. So, beware; it could happen to you.

Poodle
Friday morning between 9:30 and 10, someone took our little toy poodle, whose name is Molly, 6 years old. We are all she knows as mom and dad. I cry all the time, walk the floors. I can't function without my little girl. Please don't hurt her and return Molly to us. We love her so much. She is ours and I grieve over her every day, can't sleep. My sorrow is overwhelming. Please bring Molly home to Pleasant Ridge Drive, Plattsburgh. No questions asked. You have no idea how hard it is for us.

Baseball
In regard to sports and its favoritism. My son tried out for the Peru modified baseball team. He along with 12 others were cut from the team. There were 26 boys from 7th and 8th grade to try out, 13 made the team, majority being 8th graders. I had to schedule a meeting with the athletics director to find out why he had been cut. I was told by the director that there would be a second team to start for those boys after Easter. So far, nothing. Thanks for lowering my son's self esteem.

Religion
I am a Catholic. While I am sad that Notre Dame invited ugly controversy by asking our president to be graduation speaker, I am proud of him for having the courage to accept the challenge. Our government is based on the separation of church and state. All religions have the right to believe abortion is not acceptable, but religions do not make laws — voting citizens do that. Obama is right in asking for everyone to make abortion unnecessary through human-development education, knowledge of all birth-control methods and financial help for the pregnant person to have the child.

Sense
Take a ride north from Chazy to Champlain on our trade corridor Interstate 87. You can see piles of brush that has been piled along the roadway for months. Perhaps the Department of Transportation should have finished the job. They would have been better off cutting 2 or 3 miles of brush and finishing the job instead of cutting brush along a section that runs at least 5 miles long and leaving it piled for months on end. Perhaps the people responsible (not the workers) should attend some training on how to finish a job. It could be titled "Common Sense."

Stolen
To the person who stole my daughter's red and yellow Fischer-Price car out of our yard this weekend, you have no morals. Obviously your child needed it more than mine. I hope that's not the way you intend to raise your children. I did not think I had to lock it up in Plattsburgh.

Signs
It is yard-sale season and time for a gentle reminder that the yard sale is not done until you take down the signs that you put up throughout the neighborhood. Thank you.

Weight
I can't believe some of the officers they have working at the Clinton County Jail. I was recently incarcerated and some of the COs, I don't believe, can run fast enough to get to a fight because of their size. I do believe they are overweight. I've seen these guys, and some of them should be told to lose some weight. I really wish the sheriff would take a look at his overweight officers.

Self-serving
Re: Cheers and Jeers, May 18. Come on, eight paragraphs about Press-Republican employees saving a family of ducks. While I am happy that the little critters are on their way, I am a bit worried that you guys might hurt your shoulders patting yourselves on the back so hard. I just hope you're not out there saving the world on company time.

Disabled
I am disabled and get asked a lot, Hey, are you working? People, you know I am disabled, why are you asking that? My business is not my own. You do what you can to watch my life and what I do, and then you say right out loud in public, Hi how are you, are you working? My question to you is, do you have a job for me — don't worry about it then. It will come back to you.

Weather
Nice graduation ceremony at SUNY Plattsburgh. Bad part was the weather and nowhere to go after the ceremony. Ceremony traffic overflowed into afternoon session. No traffic control after the second session. City Police should have helped out with Rugar Street traffic making one way turns, right or left to help clear the parking lot. With the bad weather, the graduates and families had nowhere to go but clutter in the lobby area. Should have maybe used the ice arena to alleviate that mess. Poorly planned for inclement weather.
