Speakout: May 29, 2009

TOPIC CLOSED

We have received many Speakout submissions about Willsboro Central School cutting its band program. Readers have expressed their support for cutting the expense or their outrage at eliminating the program. We feel all views have been covered and will no longer run Speakouts about this issue after the last few remaining submissions appear. Readers are always welcome to address the issue in a signed letter to the editor. Send those to: letters@pressrepublican.com

DELAYS

Haven't seen your Speakout? There are a few possible reasons.

We won't publish Speakouts that are longer than 100 words or that we consider libelous or inappropriate, including personal attacks, merchant complaints that we can't verify and court matters.

Also, once a topic seems to have run its course, we will cut those for a time. The point has been made, and writers are always welcome to send a signed letter to the editor of no more than 300 words for publication on the Editorial page.

Lastly, if you haven't seen your Speakout yet, you might just need a little patience. It has proven hugely popular, and most days, we have hundreds of inches waiting to get in. News articles have priority, but we try to get in a little Speakout each day.

If you have any questions, call News Editor Lois Clermont at 565-4131.

Lost wallet
On Tuesday, May 19, my daughter either lost or had her brown American Eagle wallet stolen. She is a college student who had her weekly wages of approximately $160 in it. If anyone has seen it or knows someone that found it, could you please call us at 492-2383.

Band
What constitutes a successful band program at Willsboro School? You can ask the music teacher, since she has been at the school for close to 20 years. There are several factors involved in the reason the program was cut and none of them involve the budget. None being the music teacher's fault. Declining enrollment, other classes labs and AIS during band time, not enough instruments for all students who want to play, and the biggest reason no time for the teacher in her schedule to properly teach band lessons. Look around, there are two music teachers at every school.

Teacher
I am writing this letter in support of the music teacher at Willsboro School. My son is a recent graduate, and this teacher could not do enough for him. She gave up free time at 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. whenever he wanted extra help. She was there for him when no other teacher seemed to care. Do not insult the intelligence, expertise, enthusiasm and especially commitment of this teacher. She was my son's favorite teacher. Band was his way to deal with the pressures of school. Taking away this important subject will take away the freedom of the kids.

Music
Everyone has a right to their opinion, but the Speakout headlined Instruction from today's paper is just plain wrong. It is the administration's fault for getting rid of band at Willsboro School. It has nothing to do with the teacher. I have read that it takes 10 years to rebuild a band program after it is cut. This band program was also cut a few years ago. No wonder it is so hard to rebuild. The administration and Board of Education should be helping the teacher.

Instructor
I just read the Speakout today about the music teacher at Willsboro, and I am very upset. What is the matter with you people? This music teacher is being singled out and penalized because she is ill. She is one of the most dedicated teachers in the school. And, I know for a fact she would do anything for her students. She is committed and loved by many students. Personal magnetism? Expertise? She has both. I am proud to say that my daughter was in band. Please give her that chance again.

Blame
I must come to the aid of the music teacher in Willsboro. For anyone to suggest that this teacher is not "enthusiastic, does not have expertise, personal magnetism and commitment" is not accurate in any way. It is hard for a teacher to be enthusiastic when she is ill. Should this be held against her? She did the best she could at the time and is working on getting better. As far as expertise, this teacher is very knowledgeable in her subject area. She knows exactly what she is teaching. Do not blame this on her.

Wait
Recently, we flew out of Plattsburgh airport and back. We landed on time, then we had to wait for our luggage 30 minutes. I think that is uncalled for. If Plattsburgh airport wants to be international, then hire people for just this kind of problem.

Purse
I would like to say thank you to the person who found my purse in the shopping cart at Sam's.
