Letters to the Editor: Dec. 28, 2012

(Continued)

This past year, we’ve seen shootings in Chicago, Colorado, Wisconsin and Oregon, all of which are senseless no matter how you look at it. And for all parents — myself included — we want to hug our children just a little bit tighter and longer than usual.

We keep hearing about gun control (a rallying cry that I’ve heard all my life) and what can be done to stop all of this. When even the president of the United States can’t finish his prepared speech because he is too overcome by emotion, we have to wonder “what next?”

As a person who can say that I’m proud to be an American, it is a sad and tragic day when something like this happens in this country. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of that town who are facing every parent’s nightmare.

This holiday, while we’re celebrating with our families and friends, let’s not take any of this for granted. Let’s remember these people who will never be able to celebrate Christmas as usual.
