Giving Tree

TO THE EDITOR: Through the generosity of the communities of Mooers and Mooers Forks, the Giving Tree program had another successful year in 2013.

Parishioners of St. Ann’s and St. Joseph’s Catholic churches, Mooers Methodist Church, community members and employees at Mooers Elementary School helped to provide Christmas gifts for 55 children in the area.

The dedication and holiday spirit displayed by all the volunteers was wonderful to see and made a real difference to the many young people who are served by the program.

Special thanks to all the volunteers for their time spent setting up Giving Trees in the local churches, delivering, organizing, and handing out presents at Mooers Elementary School. Our community is fortunate to have people so willing to help others during the holiday season.

Singing for dollars

TO THE EDITOR: On Friday, Dec. 13, a group of not-very-good singers descended on the restaurants and taverns of Plattsburgh, singing carols, spreading holiday cheer and raising money for the Clinton County Christmas Bureau.

It was Plattsburgh’s 14th-annual Santa Night, and since the event’s first experiment in 2000, it has raised more than $125,000 for the bureau. This year, the event raised more than $12,000.

The Clinton County Christmas Bureau is an amazing, all-volunteer organization whose mission is to help less fortunate families in the North Country provide a Christmas experience when one can’t be financially afforded, including gifts for children and a full Christmas dinner.

I want to thank all the participants who sang poorly, the restaurants and taverns for hosting us and the community who again gave generously.

Special thanks goes to the businesses who sponsored this year’s event: Wal-Mart, Sample Lumber, Whitbeck Associates, MaryAnne Bukolt-Ryder, Day Brothers Boats, EZ Properties, Haley Lumber, Kneucraft Fine Jewelry, Liquor Wine Warehouse, North Country Law, Plattsburgh Lions, CDC Real Estate, NBT Insurance Agency, Palmer Veterinary Clinic, Plattsburgh Oral Surgery, Punki’s Shear Perfection, West Bay Financial Group.

The impact your efforts and generosity has made on the lives of your North Country neighbors is more dramatic than you will ever know. Thank you, and see you again this December.
