Recognizing shop

TO THE EDITOR: A huge thank you to Dunkin Donuts at Skyway Plaza for helping Momot students celebrate Red Ribbon Week.

Their donation of Munchkins in support of Momot students’ “do-not” do drugs was greatly appreciated and was the perfect ending to our week-long celebration.

Climate changes

TO THE EDITOR: If a baseball player on steroids

hits a home run, we might argue about the cause.

However, doesn’t everyone agree that steroids and the stronger players who use them have contributed to the rise in home runs hit?

If you think about Typhoon Haiyan and killer heat waves as home runs hit by a climate on steroids, your understanding of climate change is coming into focus.

We are injecting ever-increasing doses of “steroids,” primarily CO2, into the atmosphere as we burn fossil fuels.

If you live another 20 years, you will be able to watch Arctic Sea ice completely disappear, at least in summertime. Instead of that big, white sun hat she has been wearing, Grandmother Earth will be sporting a quickly warming, dark blue ocean on the North Pole.

In 1910, there were 150 glaciers in Glacier National Park. Now there are only 25. It will not be long before children visiting there will be wondering, “Why is it called ‘Glacier’?” (See “Icon of Change” http://www.flatheadbeacon.com/articles/article/icon_of_change/36392/

The ice on Greenland will soon be pouring out into the oceans just like in 2012, but every summer. There are early reports the whole ice sheet is starting to move. Greenland may be in the beginning stages of very rapid deglaciation: http://www.yaleclimatemediaforum.org/2013/07/this-is-not-cool-yale-forum-video-details-melting-of-greenland-ice-sheet/

There is enough ice on Greenland to raise the world’s oceans more than 20 feet.
