---- — Relay team

TO THE EDITOR: This year was my first year forming a team for Relay for Life.

I created a team called LOL- Lots of Love. I couldn’t have done it without the people who donated or helped out in little ways.

I was fortunate to have two local businesses allow me to fundraise at their business. The Koffee Kat allowed my team to sell raffle tickets, luminaries and bracelets. We greatly appreciate them allowing us to be there. The Chazy Stewart’s Shop allowed team LOL to have a car wash there. The space was perfect, and we thank you for letting us use your parking space.

Thank you to Olivia Blaise, Rachel Pombrio, Kinnan Latremore and Maura Trombley, who all celebrated their sweet 16 birthdays together and, instead of gifts, asked for donations to the American Cancer Society. They raised $900 and donated it to Team LOL. It was very thoughtful of them. It means so much to me because I have known these girls for a long time and they didn’t need to do that but they chose to.

Team LOL raised $2,753, and I couldn’t have done any of this without the help from the people on my team. I would like to give a big thanks to my team members: my mom, Lisa, Karen and Bailey Pepper and Taylor Laurin. They took time out of there busy lives to come to fundraisers and also get donations from people. I greatly appreciate all of their hard work.

Also, thank you to everyone that supported our team, whether it was a donation, purchasing a raffle ticket, bracelet or luminara or doing all of it.

It’s unbelievable how supportive everyone is in our community.

Toxic disgrace

TO THE EDITOR: The GOP-controlled House of Representatives lives in the 1950s world.

There are no black Republicans in the House. They have an aversion to gays and bisexuals; there are none in the House who are Republicans. Their view is that women should be subservient – only 8 percent of the House are women. And the House either believes that gun-safety legislation is naked tyranny or they are too cowardly to refute the lies of the NRA because they fear the loss of their cushy jobs in the next election.

By redrawing districts, Republicans managed to maintain a 33-seat advantage in the House in the 2012 election. They are spawned in homogenous red-state districts where extremism is not a vice.

Overall, today’s GOP sees democracy as a dangerous thing and views obstruction as their only goal. Republicans have not gotten over losing to a black man in 2008 and 2012. They are a toxic disgrace to the nation.

Young people today may have become disenchanted with Obama, but they detest the current GOP mindset. This, along with a host of other self-serving issues, ensures that a Democrat will be the next president.

Regardless of whether she or he is black, Latino or white, when you go to the polls in 2016, will you or will you not encourage the obstructionism that has characterized the GOP for eight years?
