Letters to the Editor: June 27, 2014

Memorable day

TO THE EDITOR: I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all of those responsible for the success of the North Country Honor Flight and especially former Director Danny Kaifetz.

I was recently the recipient of this Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. It is a day that I will long remember. It began very early on Flag Day with a ride from my home provided by the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, a salute from well wishers at the Jay Village Green, then a gathering of family, friends, scouts, National Guard, a pipe band and Honor Flight volunteers at the former Plattsburgh Air Base Oval.

It included a wonderful parade of motorcyclists, firefighters, police, county officials and supporters to the airport, where we were met by a huge contingent of well-wishers and speakers.

Then, on to Baltimore, Md. Everything went smoothly, even passing through airport security. Every need was cared for. It couldn’t have been easier.

We arrived at BWI to a water salute over the plane. I was met by my three Coast Guard granddaughters and many well wishers.

We took a comfortable bus ride to see and be honored at the World War II Memorial, with lunch served on the bus. From there, we went to Arlington National Cemetery to view a laying on of the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and changing of the guard.

Then we did a drive-by of the Iwo Jima Monument and on to a dinner provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8097 in Jessup, Md.

Finally, we headed back to Plattsburgh airport, where we were received by a wonderful crowd.

It was an exciting day for me and one I, a member of the U.S. Navy Seabees, will always remember, thanks to the preparation and hard work of North Country Honor Flight.
