---- — Health accounts

TO THE EDITOR: The 1199 SEIU United Health-Care Contract vote held on Sept. 29, 2011, with a high-deductible health insurance can be a good deal for the right consumer.

High-deductible plans are designed to be used with a health savings account. The money rolls over from year to year. The contribution cap for 2010 is $3,050 for individual, $6,150 for family.

You shouldn’t take this kind of plan if you don’t have the money to pay for care until you have met the deductible. Watch for caps on the number of doctor visits, number of days in the hospital and the dollar amount allowed for services in a year.

These plans are not for people with chronic health conditions, like diabetes, etc. Many SEIU members are still telling stories where they cannot pay the high costs; they are unable to pay for their prescriptions. Anyone who has problems should go to Human Resources and get help.

They want you to let them help.

Sterile instruments

TO THE EDITOR: Central Sterile Supply Department professionals are being celebrated for their important role and commitment to patient safety during the annual International Central Sterile Supply Department Week, Oct. 14 to 20.

The International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management represents approximately 18,000 CSSD professionals in the United States and abroad who facilitate the procurement, management and processing of surgical supplies and equipment.

CSSD professionals are responsible for processing surgical instruments, supplies and equipment. These individuals provide sup

port to patient-care services with their responsibilities encompassing cleaning and decontamination, sterilization, assembly, storage and distribution of surgical instruments needed for patient care.

If you or someone you love has undergone a surgical procedure, a CSSD professional was directly responsible for the cleaning and sterilization of the instruments used throughout your operation.

Please join us in honoring these dedicated CSSD professionals by celebrating International Central Sterile Supply Department Week.
