TO THE EDITOR: Where is the justice?

I was reading today's Press-Republican! Sex abuser gets six months in jail and 10 years probation.

I then was wondering if Judge Meyer's fingers were stinging from the little slaps on the wrist he gave Deyoe?

Do not forget he gets good time on his jail sentence! Plus 10 years of probation, it did not say supervised probation.

Our children are no longer safe in school or other "public" places, and the judges just slap sex abusers on the wrist and send them on their way!

What justice is this? This girl will carry this the rest of her life and the poor boy gets a little slap and on your way boy.

We need to get tough on sex abuse. This problem is not getting better, but worse.

TO THE EDITOR: I don't write often, but the condescending, almost insulting remarks from superintendent James "Jake" Short in the 9/25/08 newspaper (p. A5) beg for a response. His cliche-laden double-speak is inspiring. It inspires me to think of a couple myself, like "Get a grip" or "Gimme a break." I'm talking, of course, about the large swath of mature forest that was mowed down behind PHS. Mr. Short describes it as a "fiscally conservative and eco-friendly approach." Wow. To be fiscally conservative might be to not spend money for something unnecessary, and to be eco-friendly might be to not rip out a large stand of mature forest ... for something unnecessary. They're going to plant a few trees around some buildings and call it even. Again, wow. If we buy that as eco-friendly we're in a lot of trouble.

Mr. Short says the future athletic fields will increase student safety. They won't have to travel to practices. How far do they travel now and what do the statistics say about kids in accidents in the middle of the day? Mr. Short dismisses the now exposed condo owners' concerns by saying, "Frankly, we are surprised that such an obvious safety enhancement would be met with any resistance at all." Obvious, right. Those condo owners must be evil kid-haters. I went to PHS a long time ago and I think we had even more trees (oooh, scary). Luckily we made it out in one piece. I wonder if there are any other surprises from this 2003 deal. But, it doesn't matter now. Anything else will pale in comparison and, since we've jumped in with both feet we can't turn back now, can we? Thank you, James "Jake" Short.
