&letterheadLet's invade them all
TO THE EDITOR: The Middle East has gotten all the attention far too long. I think it's time we put our considerable resources and expertise in invading sovereign nations for no verifiable reason to work in other parts of the world.
We need to invade Zimbabwe immediately in order to rid that country of its cruel dictator. This action may completely destroy their country's infrastructure, but it will allow free elections to take place so they can enjoy democratic freedoms like we enjoy. The various factions there will continue to kill each other when they cannot decide who should be in charge, but who knows, it may stabilize the whole African region, eventually.
There is also a possibility this invasion will open up an al-Qaida cell that has not existed in that country before. No problem, an extended "surge" will take care of them like it has in Iraq.
Wait a minute, I just realized we don't need to jeopardize any more of our military personnel or increase our military budget.
We don't buy oil from Africa.

&letterheadAppreciates mayor
TO THE EDITOR: Recently, I have heard criticism of the mayor's work. Critics claim he should not bring up what caused many problems for the city, fiscal irresponsibility and lack of accountability by the prior elected officials of the city.
I believe wherever it occurred, to detail it explicitly. I cannot imagine the right person, at the right time more so than Mayor Kasprzak. The city, state and country were spending our taxes like there was no tomorrow, many grants were said to have clauses, either take the money now, or it will be gone.
That's stupid government. I appreciate the service the mayor is performing and I know with him in office that as soon as there is money for projects, as soon as the fiscal house is in order, the mayor will do his best to distribute the surplus funds to the most neediest of projects, whether it be paving some roads, or fixing specific public works department.
I know whenever I talk to Mayor Kasprzak I am getting an honest answer from a man who loves this city.
In the future, when choosing your candidates, make sure they have credentials for job. What were Dan Stewart's credentials? His credentials for the Prison Board? I would like to know.

&letterheadMaking a difference
TO THE EDITOR: There's a new "movement" in the community, and it's going to leave a trail of goodness; something we need during these hard times. What is it about? Letting someone know they are important, and they have made an impact in your life or in the life of someone they know. It's about sharing some peace and goodness in the community, reaching out and making a impact on the lives of others; leaving our footprints in the sand.
"Who I Am, Makes A Difference" is what we are all about. Making a difference in each other's lives by showing that we care, we notice the hard work they do, and that they do make a difference in our lives and those around us.
How are we doing this? You may see persons wearing royal blue satin ribbons that will have a gold star and the words "Who I Am, Makes A Difference" imprinted in gold on the ribbon. This is how we are passing the word along.
So, if someone wants to pin a ribbon on you, embrace it and embrace them. You have been chosen because you make a difference. Receive the envelope of ribbons along with the one pinned on you and pass the gift along. Pin a ribbon on someone who has made an impact in your life and tell them how much they mean to you. Share the envelope with them and let them also share a ribbon with someone they know.
If you see someone being pinned, and you'd like one, don't be shy. Step up and say you'd like to participate and let us give you a pin and envelope, or tell you how you can get yours.
It's a great way to make someone feel special and take someone who is having a rotten day and turn it into a more inspiring day for them. For those of you already participating, thank you for helping me make the world a better place.

&letterheadSpencer's back
TO THE EDITOR: My wife, Jodi, and I, wanted to write to let your readers know of a pleasant experience we had last week in the Town of Peru.
Our daughter's 8-month-old puppy, Spencer, got away from our son at Rob Butts's farm on the Mannix Road last Tuesday evening. We searched for Spencer until 10:30 that night, then resumed looking for him at 5:30 Wednesday morning.
Around 9 a.m., having not seen him or any fresh tracks, we decided to print up some fliers to put out at local stores and some smaller pictures with contact information to hand out to the surrounding neighborhood. Jodi called the dog-control officers for Peru and Schuyler Falls to see if someone had found Spencer. She also called Tina at Elmore SPCA to get the word out.
We asked and were allowed to put fliers out at Cadyville Gulf, Rock's Grocery, M&M Country Store, and Chases, Stewart's and Wilson Farms Peru Stores. WIRY put the announcement on their Lost and Found program.
We then went door to door on the Clark, Mannix, Patent, Peaseleeville, Taylor, Barney Downs, Calkins and John Boswell roads. We also went to the Quaker Highlands subdivision. We either spoke to the residents or left a flier on Spencer.
Long story short, we found Spencer back in the woods 1/2 mile behind Rob's farm 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. He was in good shape except for the deerfly welts and sunburned ears.
The reason for this letter is to thank all the people that helped and also to say we met so many nice people during our search. We cannot thank them enough and it is gratifying to know there are so many great caring people out there. Peru, you should be proud of your neighbors.

&letterheadHorse Show crucial
TO THE EDITOR: This is the time of year when as a community and particularly as a business community, we should reflect upon how fortunate we are to have one of the premiere horse shows in the world coming to our area.
The first week of the show (starting June 24) would be a relatively slow and difficult week without the horse show. Even the second week with July 4th could very well be less than optimum, The presence of the horse show pretty much guarantees that both these weeks will be economically productive for Lake Placid/North Elba. This is absolutely the most important event we host all year.
In return for this good fortune (especially in this year of high and escalating costs), as a community, we should sincerely open our arms and welcome all the participants (workers, trainers, grooms, exhibitors, riders) and make each and every one of them individually feel as if we consider them to be the most important person in the world, or as Ruth Newburry put it back in the 70s, "You've come and we're delighted."
To all the participants in this year's horse show, thank you for being here.

&letterheadThanks for help
TO THE EDITOR: You don't want to find yourself on I87 at 5:30 on a Friday in the no-cell-phone zone with a dangling muffler. UNLESS Ray and Laura are getting off at the same exit kind enough to stop willing to stay and help.
I did find myself in this situation and they did stop and Ray did wire up the muffler. The Saranac Tedford Brothers say, "Good job, Ray!"
I say, "Many, many thanks" to both Ray and Laura.

&letterheadPot for pain
TO THE EDITOR: So I have a rare condition that's progressive, debilitating -- chronic severe unstable sharp pains that can last for 6 months. Every step becomes more painful than the last. Opium cartelists want to engage me. I just smoke pot for it. My disabled place card should entitle me to have a classification on my driver's license to smoke and carry pot from state to state. It's my health care. I'll choose for myself. If all these people who swear to fictional characters like Mickey Mouse don't like it, they should find a slow boat back to Europe with some dirty water and a couple of limes.
