Cheers and Jeers: May 6, 2013

CHEERS to all the local residents who gave up part of a sunny spring weekend this past Saturday to help with cleanup efforts at two state parks in this region. The effort was part of the second-annual I Love My Park Day. All across New York, volunteers turned out to support beautification efforts at sites across the state. The first year the event was held, 40 parks and historic sites participated. The state said 2,000 volunteers turned out statewide and put in 6,000 hours of work. Of those helpers, 70 percent said they were new to volunteering at state parks. We imagine a number of those people showed up again for this year’s I Love My Park Day. For 2013, 77 parks and historic sites were taking part, almost double the number from last year. As of last Wednesday, 1,000 volunteers had pre-registered to help statewide, although organizers were expecting more than 4,000 people to take part. The effort this year was planned in partnership with the New York State Commission on National & Community Service. It was a glorious day, weather-wise, and the people who showed up to spruce up certainly had many other options for how to spend their time. By these are obviously citizens who care about investing in their communities. They showed their affection for these state parks with this labor of love.

CHEERS to a patient at a Plattsburgh dental office who proved a real gentleman one recent morning. A hygenist had called in sick, and when a young person with special needs arrived only to find her appointment was canceled, she became extremely distressed in the waiting room. A man waiting for his own appointment kindly offered it to the young woman, instantly brightening her day. He brushed off thanks, saying dental appointments aren’t his favorite pastime. But, in fact, it takes time and effort to set up an appointment, maybe requiring time off from work or other inconveniences. So it is a sacrifice to hand it over to someone else. The young woman he helped has difficulty with unexpected change, something her mom says may seem like a little thing to most, but can be truly upsetting to her daughter. The girl’s uncle, who was with her that morning, and her mother are extremely grateful to the man who came to the rescue. The term “gentleman” may seem outdated now, but is entirely fitting in this case.
