EDITORIAL: Be prepared for disaster

Here's some advice, volunteered by Michael Harrigan, that never grows stale. (Harrigan is a registered nurse and emergency-preparedness liaison for Franklin County Public Health Services in Saranac Lake.) He is writing on behalf of Franklin County, but his words apply to the entire North Country.

These are steps recommended to prepare for an emergency situation and, in particular, actions to help ensure the health of family or community members who have health conditions requiring special attention and planning, such as people on oxygen, in a wheelchair or requiring extra help around the house.

Put together an emergency supply kit.

Consider how an emergency or disaster would affect you and determine what items or resources you would need following an event. Plan on being on your own for at least three days while putting together your emergency kit.

Some recommended basic supplies include:

1 gallon of water per person per day for drinking and sanitation.

At least a three-day supply of non-perishable foods (such as meals ready to eat -- called MREs) and a can opener if you stock canned food.

Medications, such as those for your heart, blood pressure, thyroid, etc.

Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (to receive weather and hazard alerts).

Flashlight and extra batteries (for radio and flashlights).

First-aid kit.

Small tool kit (include any special tools, e.g., wrench to turn on an oxygen tank).

Pet food or supplies that your pet or service animal will need.

Develop a plan.

Make sure you have enough medication or medical supplies, such as oxygen, wheelchair, hearing aids or eyeglasses.
