After our famously long winters, the North Country always awakens to some inspired entertainment in the spring and summer. The next two weekends offer great examples.

The Press-Republican is sponsoring its Second-Annual Museum Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this coming Saturday, rain or shine. The admission-free event is designed to introduce local residents and visitors to the wonders of the Plattsburgh area's growing inventory of exciting museums:

•  The Champlain Valley Transportation Museum and Kids' Station on the Old Base will have guided tours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m, including its interactive art exhibit for kids, model trains, Racing Room, antique and classic cars and the sail ferry Weatherwax. 566-7575.

•  Feinberg Library Special Collections at 2 Draper Ave., Plattsburgh, will feature three films showing continuously: on the Underground Railroad, the Great Adirondack Camps and on the 100th anniversary of Plattsburgh State. 564-5206.

•  The Clinton County Historical Association, 98 Ohio Ave., Old Base, (561-0340) will have a number of exhibits, including the 1909 Tercentenary of Samuel de Champlain's discovery of the lake that bears his name, Redford Glass, the War of 1812 and a children's "Boats and Lighthouses" program.

•  The North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association (561-0277) will have a discussion of the Champlain Valley's Underground Railroad Canadian connections at the State Historical Association Conference at Plattsburgh State from 8:30 to 10 a.m., as well as the Feinberg display mentioned previously.

•  The Kent-DeLord House museum, 17 Cumberland Ave. (561-1035), will feature Fanny Hall's office and apothecary, where she dispensed medical care to Plattsburgh, and Frances Henrietta DeLord's bedroom, along with tours and kids activities.

•  The Battle of Plattsburgh Association, 31 Washington Road (566-1814), will conduct tours of the museum at 10, 1 and 2:30, along with continuous presentations in the Press-Republican Theatre with historical re-enactor Josh Wingler and standing exhibits.

•  The Strand Theatre and North Country Cultural Center for the Arts, 30 Brinkerhoff St. (563-1604), will offer tours, Theatre for Youth, kindermusik and a High School Juried Art exhibit.

•  Alice T. Miner Museum, 9618 Main St., Chazy (846-7336) will have guided tours from 10 to noon, and letters written by Thomas Jefferson will be on display. The museum will close at 1:30 p.m.

The following Saturday, the Plattsburgh Breakfast Kiwanis Club will host its Third-Annual Dozer Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Airborne Speedway.

There, kids will have the chance to run construction equipment, dig for buried treasures, climb obstacle walls, take a turn at the dunking booth, ride in race cars and amble through a petting zoo.

Admission will be $5 for adults and $4 for children 4 to 12 (3 and under free). The proceeds will go to the CVPH Medical Center Foundation's Children's Charities. Tickets are available at Airborne, Taylor Rental, North Bowl Lanes, Cumberland Bay Market and participating NAPA and Aubuchon Hardware stores.
