As many of you know, Saturday, Oct. 5, we held our first-ever American Red Cross Run for the Red 5K in Lake Placid.
All I can say is wow! The overwhelming number of runners and walkers who participated in this inaugural event not only demonstrated to me the undeniable support for the Red Cross but the commitment to our North Country community.
The success of this important fundraising event is shared by many, and I would like to take a moment to thank you all. From our neighbors and registrants to the sponsors and businesses who donated their time and services, I’m in awe of your generosity.
To Chief Bill Moore and Lake Placid Police Department, Lake Placid Fire Department, Essex County Sheriff’s Department, State Police Troop B K-9 Unit, Lake Placid Central School District, ORDA, Town of North Elba, Hannaford of Lake Placid, Lake Placid Pub and Brewery, Bear Essentials and Lake Placid Mayor Craig Randall, you all represent the true essence of a community partnership with your support of the American Red Cross.
Lastly, I want to thank the American Red Cross North Country Chapter Board of Directors, volunteers, interns and staff. Your involvement and support not only made this event possible but it helped to make this an event that residents of Lake Placid and the surrounding towns will not want to miss in 2014.

TO THE EDITOR: Oct. 11 dawned a warm autumn day for the 72 golfers who took to the tees for the fourth-annual Leo Bourgeois Memorial Golf Tournament to raise money for Mr. B’s scholarship fund at Peru Central School.
Because of the generosity of sponsors, donors and golfers, $4,000 was raised for the Leo Bourgeois Memorial Scholarship Fund. Since its inception, $6,600 in scholarships have been awarded to six PCS college-bound students.
