---- — Community benefit

TO THE EDITOR: In a recent letter to the editor, Morgan Ferris takes exception to the action of the Plattsburgh City Council, who turned down a petition for a night-time march by the organizers of Take Back the Night.

Her cause is a worthy one and undoubtedly deserved better.

Unfortunately, however, Ms. Ferris continues by maligning another worthy cause — a Sunday afternoon block party sponsored by Irises and several other local restaurants — for which the council has allowed a one-block street closure. As she rightly says, “Maybe there needs to be a bit more disclosure about this ‘party’ and the idea of closing that street to traffic in the summer.”

The restaurants involved are donating the food and drink, as well as the services of their staffs and items for a silent auction. Two musicians and a band will be donating their musical talents, and entertainment for children will be provided by a dozen college volunteers from Project Help.

For very modest fees, attendees can sample a wide variety of food and drink. Most importantly, all profits will go to the Strand Theatre Restoration Project — a high priority not only for the city but the surrounding area, as well.

Far from “only thinking of their own business and not the good of the city,” the organizers have put together a clearly community-oriented event in order to contribute to the completion of this valuable arts venue. Their efforts should be applauded.

Free dentistry

TO THE EDITOR: On Sept. 15, Dentistry from the Heart New York, hosted by High Peaks Dental, provided a day of free dental care to the people of the North Country.

This extremely fun and successful day could not have been possible without the involvement of local volunteers and organizations who so generously donated their time, talents and products.

Our heart-filled thanks go out to Aubuchon Hardware, Benco Dental, Bobby’s Lounge, Bucks’s Supply & Distribution, Dash Medical, Dentsply, Dickies Bar-B-Que, Dunkin Donuts, Freihofer’s, Frito-Lay, Henry Schein Dental, Koffee Kat, Lake Placid Oral Surgery, McSweeney’s Red Hots, McSweeney Orthodontics, Morrisonville Septic, Pepsi, Price Chopper, Rambach’s Bakery, Sam’s Club, Subway, Town of Plattsburgh Highway Department, Valley Vending, WIRY Hometown Radio, WSLP The Choice for the Tri-Lakes and The New B 100.7 WPLB.

Thanks again to these organizations for helping Dentistry from the Heart give North Country residents a true reason to smile.

Mortgage defaults

TO THE EDITOR: So mortgage defaults are on the rise. The Federal Reserve is going to purchase $40,000,000,000 in mortgage debt per month, $480,000,000,000 per year from the big banks.

They will be printing new money to pay for this (out of thin air). Sounds like a yet another (stealth) bank bailout to me. Snookered again.

Tell your senators you support a full audit of the Federal Reserve.
